On  Wednesday July 1,2009, West Union Police arrested Randall Lee Thompson Jr., 20, of Cedar Falls at a residence on S. Walnut St in West Union.  Randall was wanted by authorities in Black Hawk County on 2 warrants for failure to appear for a pretrial hearing and a sentencing hearing.  Thompson was also wanted by authorities in Bremer County for Failure to appear for a plea change hearing.   Thompson was also charged by West Union Police for possession of prescription drug.   Thompson was transported to the Fayette County jail where he was held for court.   

 At approximately 7:30 PM, on July 1st, 2009 West Union Police executed an arrest warrant on Shaw Staudinger age 27 of West Union. The warrant for violation of parole had been issued earlier the same day. Staudinger was transported to the Fayette County Law Enforcement Center and held on $10,000.00 cash bond only. The West Union Police were assisted by the Iowa Department of Corrections.

On Sunday, July 5th 2009, West Union Police stopped a vehicle on Hwy 150 near Hardees for a traffic violation.  Upon investigation it was determined the driver, Ryan Nichols-Church, 19, of Fayette was under the influence of alcohol.  Nichols-Church was taken to the Fayette County Law Enforcement Center where a civil action was taken with his drivers license by the DOT for having a blood alcohol level of above .02 but below .08.  Nichols Church was also cited for failing to wear a seatbelt and was released to a friend.  A passenger in the vehicle Jodi D. Duffey , 17, of Fayette was charged with minor in possession of tobacco and released at the scene. 

On Thursday, July 9, 2009 West Union Police responded to a two vehicle accident on Lincoln Drive in West Union.  Investigation revealed a 2005 Buick Rainer driven by Todd R. Wenthold,44, of West Union was East bound on Lincoln Court.  At the same time a 1995 Chevrolet truck driven by Jeremy M. Halstead,21, of West Union was Westbound when it appeared that he was about to collide with the vehicle driven by Wenthold .  Halstead made corrective action in an attempt to avoid a collision.  Wenthold also made corrective action to get back in his lane.  The action by each vehicle casued a near head on collision.   Both vehicles were severely damaged but nobody was hurt in the incident.   Wenthold was issued a citation for failure to yield half of the roadway when meeting an oncoming vehicle. 

On Monday, July 13th the West Union Police Department investigated two accidents the first accident was reported at approximately 12:00 pm when a 2003 Ford driven by Tricia Loomis (20) of Elgin was backing out of a parking space at Edge FX when she struck a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee owned by Jennifer Ray (26) also of Elgin. Neither driver was injured and the vehicles combined, sustained around $900.00 in damage. Loomis was issued a citation for no insurance.

The second accident was reported around 12:30 pm at the intersection of Pine and Hwy 18. When a 2001 Ford F250 Pick-up driven by Mary Flatin (52) of Waukon was traveling east on 18 and was
rear-ended by a 1999 Chrysler Sebring driven by Steven Baker Jr. (21) of Clermont
. The Baker
vehicle was considered a complete loss and the Flatin vehicle had an estimated $1,800.00 in
damages. Neither party was injured and Baker was issued a citation for failure to maintain control
of vehicle. The West Union Police were assisted at the scene by the West Union Fire Department.

On Tuesday July 14th at around 11 :30 am the West Union Police investigated an accident that occurred at the comer of Wells and Adams Street. A 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van Driven by Lawrence Schneider (61) of West Union was traveling south on Wells Street when it struck a nine year old juvenile on a bicycle that was also traveling south on Wells. The juvenile was transported by private vehicle to Palmer ER and treated for minor injuries. The van received no damage and the bicycle was considered a total loss. The driver of the van was issued a citation for failing to maintain control of vehicle. The West Union Police were assisted by the Fayette County Sheriffs Office.

On July 14th the West Union Police arrested Tommy Lee Duffer Jr. (34) of West Union at 208
South Pine Street for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Duffer was
transported to the Fayette County Law Enforcement Center and held for an initial appearance
before magistrate. The West Union Police were assisted at the scene by Canine Roscoe, the Iowa
Department of Human Services, and the Fayette County Sheriffs Office.

On Sunday July 19, 2009 shortly after 11:30PM  West Union Police found a juvenile in possession of an alcoholic beverage in the parking lot of the Shell Express.  Further investigation found more alcohol in a car parked in the lot belonging to the juvenile.  Another juvenile that was present at the scene had fled the Shell Express station through the back door to avoid police.  Charged with Possession of alcohol and a violation of the West Union City Curfew were Rachel E. Hanson, 17, of Hawkeye and Danielle L. Jermeland, 16, of West Union.  Jermelands charge of Possession of alcohol was upgraded to a second offense due to a previous charge.  Both females were referred to juvenile court and released to a parent. 

On  Monday, July 27, 2009 at approximately 8:00 pm the West Union Police Department stopped a red Chevrolet Beretta for failing to properly display license plates at the intersection of Vine and Franklin. Upon an investigation it was determined that Dekota Villa (18) of Hawkeye was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested at the scene and taken to the Fayette County Law Enforcement Center and held on $1,300.00 bond. West Union's police dog Roscoe, who is trained to find illegal drugs assisted at the scene.

On Thursday, July 30th at approximately 3:00 pm the West Union Police Department received a report of a hit and run that had taken place in the Good Samaritan Horne parking lot at 201 Hall Street. After a brief investigation at the scene it was determined that an unknown vehicle hit a 2005 Ford car owned by Dianne Nienhaus (47) ofFt. Atkinson. The Nienhaus vehicle received estimated damages in the amount of $1 ,200. The accident remains under investigation.

On Friday, July 31,2009  at approximately 10:49 P.M. West Union Police observed a subject staggering in circles around a tree in the 200 block of South Vine St.   Arrested for Public Intoxication and Possession of a Schedule I controlled substance-marijuana 3rd offense was Donald “Red” Ganske,49, of West Union.  Ganske was taken to Palmer Lutheran Health Center for observation  and later the Fayette County law enforcement center where he was held for court.
