SOLICITORS FOR DONATIONS

From time to time we get calls from local citizens wanting to know if a certain organization is legitimate and wonder if they should donate money to that organization. These organizations may tell you that your donation will go to benefit your local police. It has been a trend lately that the large police associations will contract with a telemarketing agency to raise money to support their group. If you do make a donation, please keep in mind that a portion of your donation is going directly to the telemarketing company to offset their operating costs, and the rest would go to the police organization. Most of the time these associations are statewide or even nationwide, so your money is not being used for your local Police Department.

We are aware that a large number of people  make donations, thinking that they are supporting their local police. This is simply "not true"! While I can not tell you where to donate your money, if a telemarketing company contacts you to donate to a police association, your money probably is not being used to support your local community. Ask them to give you a telephone number, where you can call them back, and tell them that you are going to do some research on the organization that they are soliciting for. If after you have researched the association and feel that it is a worthwhile association, then by all means make a donation. If you are unsure please call your local Police Department or Sheriff's Department.
