The West Union Police Department offers tips on traffic safety as well as general information which involves your safety in the event of a traffic stop.

Traffic Safety

Always wear your safety belts: Most accidents happen within a mile or two of home. Check your vehicle for safety before leaving home. This includes a brief inspection of your lights, turn signals, brake lights, tires, wipers, and glass. Do periodic checks to make sure everything is working.

Always allow yourself extra travel time in adverse weather conditions.

Prepare yourself for winter driving conditions. Carry blankets and extra clothing in case you are stranded. You may even want to carry a small first aid kit for emergencies. A simple candle could provide warmth for short periods, but make sure you crack a window before using a candle to keep warm. Fire will burn the oxygen in the drivers compartment if left burning for long periods of time. In the event you would go off the roadway, be sure that your tailpipe is not plugged by snow or debris.. This will help prevent you from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Watch out for the other guy. Today with the fast pace in life, people are not concentrating on their driving skills. If you need to use a cell phone, please pull off in a safe place to have your conversation.

Look far ahead of where you're driving. You may notice something ahead of you that could prevent a traffic accident.

Pay close attention in areas where children are present. Watch for toys that may dart out in front of you, because the next thing to dart out in front of you will be the child.
